I read this book in August and I really enjoyed it, so I thought it was time I finally made a review for it. So when people start turning dead, and obviously killed by a wild animal, the people ask for his help. But Bolivar is old now, and all he cares about is the book that is waiting for him in his small house. I wanted to talk about this book because I found it was extremely beautiful and poetic. It is an ode to nature, and to respect what we are given. Bolivar is an amazing character, who is solitary and understands nature better than any of us.

A man is forced to confront a dangerous female jaguar and his own past through the sacrificial killing of the beast he has grown to love. A leisurely and beautifully filmed movie which concerns an old man Dreyfus living in a remote backwater of the Amazon River. Late in life he has learned to read, and he has taken to reading love stories, savouring each word as if it were a morsel of a feast.

The narrative concerns the hunt for a jaguar which has apparently acquired a taste for human flesh. During this adventure we share the old man's reflections, reveries and regrets, fragments of a past life. In the unfolding of the story he is able to make reparation for at least one of his regrets. The film could be criticised for being slow and uneven at times. I have not read the novel, but I'm sure that it was multi-layered and textured, with underlying themes of missed opportunities, loss of innocence, the environment and the egregious impact of civilisation.

The movie only hints at these things and sometimes were are left a little puzzled. But the eloquence is in the mood, which is perfectly captured. Highly recommended. Sign In. Compared with the taut, allegorical power of The Tracker , and the bleak vision of revenge in Alexandra's Project , there's something much calmer and more leisurely about this work, even if it's a tale of life, death and atonement. It is based on a short novel by Luis Sepulveda, and set in a remote Amazonian location: the old man of the title is Antonio Bolivar Richard Dreyfuss , who has lived most of his life in a small riverside hut.

Australian director Rolf de Heer's fondness for making films about isolated characters on the fringes of society gets an elegiac work-out in "The Old Man Who Read Love Stories," a gentle and immensely likable adaptation of the novel by Luis Sepulveda. By David Stratton. Filmed entirely on jungle locations in French Guiana, and centered on an engagingly mellow and subtle performance by Richard Dreyfuss, this French-Aussie co-production presents a hefty marketing challenge but could post solid rewards in niche venues before a decent ancillary life where, unfortunately, its spacious visuals will be severely circumscribed. Instead, he presents a character study of a simple man who finds his pleasures in the small things of life. In a stilted opening sequence, an unseen female narrator introduces Antonio Bolivar Dreyfuss , a ish man who lives in El Idilio, a village located beside a tributary of the Amazon. Bolivar, we are told, came here when he was a young man to help colonize the jungle.

After secondary school in Santiago, he studied theatre production at the National University. He also acted as a mediator between the government and Chilean companies. After the Chilean coup of which brought to power General Augusto Pinochet he was jailed for two-and-a-half years and then obtained a conditional release through the efforts of the German branch of Amnesty International and was kept under house arrest. He managed to escape and went underground for nearly a year. He was rearrested and given a life sentence later reduced to twenty-eight years for treason and subversion. The German section of Amnesty International intervened again and his prison sentence was commuted to eight years of exile, and in he left Chile to fly to Sweden where he was supposed to teach Spanish literature. He had to leave again because of the local regime and finally settled in Quito in Ecuador guest of his friend Jorge Enrique Adoum. During the expedition he shared the life of the Shuars for seven months and came to an understanding of Latin America as a multicultural and multilingual continent where the Marxism-Leninism he was taught was not applicable to a rural population that was dependent on its surrounding natural environment.
