Mixed thoughts on this. I think Ms. Blackmore has some good substance to her memetics theory, but there are points where she gets too fuzzy, and her explanations didn't convince me completely of its The one that started it all for me.

The Hot New Meme Is Giving in to Your Worst Impulses

Ernesto Hernandez , Contributing Writer May 4, The meme typically refers to a woman, usually white, who is seen as demanding and privileged. While it can be difficult to trace a meme back to its original source, the thought is that it first originated on Reddit and it was from a man who was upset at his ex-wife for taking his children away.

It made its way around the Internet before hitting its apex on Twitter. The controversy surrounding the meme happened when Julie Bindel, a U. Whether related to the responses or not, Bindel has since deleted her account. The attempt to equate it anywhere near equivalent to a slur was always going to backfire. A theme that the meme puts into focus is the difference between those with power and those without and how it is wielded, particularly in the service industry.

I feel like it is more evident than ever due to what we see going on with the coronavirus. At the end of the day, what this comes down to is people taking something that was supposed to be funny and making a mountain of a molehill.

I only consider Karens as the rude ladies we get at work. That generation got tired of it so they made up that phrase which the older generation immediately took offense upon. Are they Karens too? The term absolutely is both racist and sexist. A Karen is simply a strong white woman who is not afraid of confrontation when she feels she is being slighted, or treated unfairly in some way.

No one who is not named Karen would find this offensive. It is obvious to me that people who use this term do not have a Karen in their life that they love otherwise, they would never use the term. I find this not only racist but demeaning. Remove the color and circumstances are the same. The IRONY there is people complaining about this, fully fit the very stereotype the meme is trying too identify. Well now! Airhead, ditz, well they are only dumb women, not all women.

That is pretty poor arguing right there. But seriously this guy is bending over backwards to make things work for his argument. In questioning whether it is a slur he decides to only consider it as a potential racial slur. A slur is an insinuation or allegation about someone that is likely to insult them or damage their reputation. And it definitely is that. Hell, what a mess if you look at it too long.

Really I feel worst for the people who actually have this name. Especially the younger ones and the ones who have mental health issues. A teenage girl recently killed herself because she was being bullied over this. Her sister put out a plea for us to stop this, and we probably should if people are taking it too far and kids are dying. It is also not about whether the women in this demographic are right, wrong, good, or bad. Would it be acceptable to use a racial slur in a meme with a picture of a black or Hispanic doing something that fits into a stereotype?

In all cases, it is intended to be offensive to a demographic, ridicule them, and put yourself above them. Experience: my face became a meme

There are probably few forces as capable of driving the meme space as stock photography, a source of endless, just-generic-enough, just-specific-enough photos the viewers can imprint their own values onto. It quickly went meta, so if you understand these memes, maybe go see a doctor? Already a subscriber?

How memetic media—aggregate texts that are collectively created, circulated, and transformed—become a part of public conversations that shape broader cultural debates. Internet memes—digital snippets that can make a joke, make a point, or make a connection—are now a lingua franca of online life. They are collectively created, circulated, and transformed by countless users across vast networks.

Day 7 of quarantine — my homie resorted to simping and facetimed a girl… pic. The kids are simpin. It could be because no one really knows what the hell it means. And long before it was adopted by the TikTokers, the word was around in black culture for years. But the most widely accepted definition of the phrase, according to upvotes by Urban Dictionary users, is one posted in :.

People online thought my smile, combined with the look in my eyes, seemed terribly sad. A professional photographer had got in touch after seeing my holiday photographs on Facebook. He said he was seeking someone like me to be in some stock images.

The video-chatting app Zoom has exploded in popularity while people are quarantined, and while its true purpose is for work-related meetings, you can also use Zoom just to hang out with your friends. One feature that gives Zoom a competitive edge is the ability to use a custom background instead of whatever room you're in while you chat. And that has been taken to its comedic extremes, with people using memes and pop-culture references.

The way we now commiserate is via a few cynical, vaguely universal-sounding words on the human condition. Everyone knows millennials are obsessed with depression. And memes. And depression memes. The singles are without a doubt the most depressed subculture in all of depressed social media. Our current quarantine situation has, to some degree, temporarily blurred our universal feeling of rejection. The fact that this also includes you is largely irrelevant. For the time being, singles have compounded their daily dose of rejection memes with lonely self-isolation ones.

Look, we get it. The central premise of this article sounds absurd. What could possibly be funny about a global pandemic that has altered the very fabric of our existence, in one fell swoop shutting down everything we hold dear, from sports to movies to music to the very notion of human interaction?

Sex and the Single Meme

Currie Culver is about fifty-five years old, in good health, living in a comfortable retirement in the Rockies with his wife. In the wake of the Meme Wars that swept the planet two generations before, Currie, his wife, and almost everyone on Earth have in their minds a copy of One True, software that grants its hosts limited telepathy and instills a kind of general cooperation. In his younger days, Currie hunted "comboys"--people who had unplugged from the global net in order to evade One True, and who hid in wilderness areas, surviving by raiding the outposts of civilization.
