The annotations have been carefully researched and the various appendices succeed in furnishing the reader with exactly the right sort of contextual and background matter to give a better understanding of the story.

A thoughtful introduction places the novel in context, explaining its importance to sensation fiction, outlining its concern with the problem of identity and with constructions of madness, and discussing its narrative structure as well as its later stage adaptation.

Be prepared, also, for twists and turns and that slam you feel when you thought you knew what was going on and had it all figured out and you got the rug pulled out from under you!

This was written in that grand style English that you just don't find in modern literature. I adore reading it, and if you love the classics, and a good mystery, then this is for you. These people came from a different time, and what was considered a huge scandal years and years ago wouldn't raise an eyebrow today, so keep that in mind as you read. This is truly a different world. But, human nature is fairly consistent, and you will recognize in these characters, people you have read in more modern tomes, or even people you know yourself.

They are well developed, complex characters that I enjoyed immensely. I love the dramatic swooning This Kindle edition was free I'm sure you will be as engrossed as I was.

I struggled to begin this novel. In fact, I started it and gave it up within the first 50 pages two or three times over the course of as many years because I felt it was prosey and boring. After hearing yet another person rave about this book, I determined to slog through it. The story was intriguing and well written. I greatly enjoyed this book. I think it enjoys the rare privilege of being a book with little that is unnecessary to the story, rich characters who all play a significant role- even when they only seem to be a minor character in the moment, and a thousand strings that all tie together in the end.

A lot of mysteries tell you what happened and you slowly discover how it was done as you unravel the mystery of who did it. This story tells you immediately who did what, but you spend the rest of the time discovering how they did it and what, exactly, they did. Victorian England serves as the setting. A drawing teacher is hired to tutor two affluent sisters.

Collins shows the fragile nature of women in a male-dominated world. In this instance, the novel resembles a Jane Austin soap opera. The heroine is truly a damsel-in-distress. Her father wanted her to marry the despicable Percival Glyde, and she abides by his decision.

Sir Percival strips Lady Glyde of all her financial worth to pay off his gambling debts. Collins created a first-class jackal of a villain with Sir Percival. The ultimate villain is the Italian born Count Fosco. Rotund Sidney Greenstreet played the role in the Warner Brothers adaptation. Secrets play an important part in this sprawling novel. The villains are detestable and they suffer grievously for their conspiracy. One dies in a burning church, with the other is stabbed to death in the chest.

Fortune favors the woebegone hero and heroines. A great novel that I thought I might not get around to reading.

Written from multiple points of view, this mystery romance melodrama unfolds with pressing intelligence. I looked forward to my reading sessions with guilty pleasure and set a new kindle record for slow reading. After all, this was a book with rich characters and plentiful intrigue. In short, a book to be picked up in every free moment, yet not to be rushed through. A book to be savored. This was my first Wilkie Collins book and I absolutely loved it!

The characters are fun and engaging and so is the story. Originally published in serial form, I can see where this would have kept readers hankering for the next edition. I really enjoyed the narratives from a variety of characters with each contributing what they know to carry the story along.

It was considered one of the first sensation novels. Wilkie Collins was quite a skilled author. He was able to keep the reader in the dark, doling out just bits and pieces here and there, enough to keep one wondering what would happen next and not giving too much away until the end. I highly recommend this one and am looking forward to reading more of his novels. I've read this captivating novel three times over a period of 47 years, starting as a freshman in college while taking an elective course covering the subject of detective fiction.

This book abounds with intricate details masterfully intertwined and the characters are strong and engaging, including the less savory ones. I keep coming back to this story because something happens to trigger my memory of it this time it was Andrew Klavan's "The Great Good Thing" which I also recommend and then I can't recall how it all rolls out to the end so I have to satisfy my curiosity I like literature in the vein of Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters; settings of other times, social manners and a style of writing that bends my mind just a bit to challenge my routine way of reflecting on what I'm reading.

Two movies have been made of this novel in and , but I have not seen them yet. To not spoil the joy of slowly unraveling this delicious mystery, I highly recommend reading the novel before seeing a movie of it.

See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. This is a stunning book. I first read this in my late teens and was riveted.

It is considered to be among the first mystery novels and is widely regarded as one of the first and finest in the genre of "sensation novels". The story is sometimes considered an early example of detective fiction with the hero, Walter Hartright, employing many of the sleuthing techniques of later private detectives. The use of multiple narrators draws on Collins's legal training, and as he points out in his Preamble: "the story here presented will be told by more than one pen, as the story of an offence against the laws is told in Court by more than one witness". Sensation fiction thus fused the Gothic romance with the Realist novel, finding horrors not in some fantastical Medieval castle, but behind the doors of apparently normal suburban semi-detached houses, where secrets festered and multiplied.

Superman , it made me excited—and anxious. Would the producers give her a role as fierce as her origins—and maybe some shoulder straps—or would she just be cartoon eye candy? During the s, she was hardly wondrous at all, less a heroic warrior than the tomboyish girl next-door. It was no longer clear whether she was meant to empower the girls or captivate the boys.
